One Word New Years Resolution

Happy New Years everyone!

This is one of my favourite time of the years, because it is all about hope. It’s a fresh start, a new beginning, and anything is possible. People seem a little more optimistic, a little kinder to themselves, and little more brave to face challenges.

I don’t know about you, but every year I always make a long list of resolutions. I think about the last year, everything I did or did not do, and plan the year ahead to improve myself. Like others, the goals range from eating healthier to spending less, learning new skills or improving the old, or tackling a mountain of reading lists to cleaning and repair the house.

As human beings we tend to over complicate everything; especially when it comes to self improvement.

Newsflash: you don’t need a long list to dos or to bes to have an amazing year.

I am all about simplicity. That’s one of the reasons I started this blog: to help people achieve more by doing less. The way I see it, the more you simplify your goals, the easier it is to obtain them, and the less stressed you are. That gives you a huge confident boost because it means you succeeded at something! Yay you! By pulling back, and focusing on less, that doesn’t mean you achieve less in the year. It does mean it allows you too priorities, choose a focus, and work on one thing at a time. So my suggestion this year, instead of creating a whole page of goals, try to get it down to one. By one, I mean one word.

One word? Yes, one word. Just try it, even for a month. Pick one word you wish to embody this year, one word you want to become, one word you think can improve your life forever. It sounds simple, because it is, but it doesn’t make it any less powerful. With one word, you are focused on one idea, and one area of improvement. You study it, you turn it inside out, you become one with it. You think about it and it becomes part of your routine. With one word you can focus your whole attention on it, and give it your all. You don’t have to worry about the twenty other goals you set for yourself and not finishing any of them. What’s in a word? It’s all up to you.

Give the word meaning for your life. The word “free” is only one syllable long, but you can take it in countless directions. You can free yourself debt, anxiety, self doubt, bad habits. You can free up your time by prioritizing. You can forgive someone and free yourself from a grudge. You can learn how to overcome obstacles and free yourself from your trails. The goal is yours, and the year is new. The best part is there are no rules, and there shouldn’t be. You decide what you want to do with this new opportunity, and what you want out of this year. A one word resolution is just to get those little cogs in your head turning. Take the word, expand it and make it yours.

Not sure which word is your word? Here are a few suggestions:

A Couple Other Ideas to Get You Started:

-Pick your word and look up the definition. I’m sure you know what all of these words mean, but it’s good to go back to the basics. Write it down, and then write your own definition down. Then think about what you want it to mean for your life. How can it help you reach other goals you have? What do you want to become? What do you want to achieve? What does this word mean to you?

-Think of other words that relate to your word. When you think of those words how does it add new meaning to your word? Has your perspective of your word changed?

-Set a couple goals based on your word. In everything you do, try to relate it back to your word.

-Find quotes that relate to this word and hang them up to inspire you.

-(I’ve seen some people do this and it’s fun) write the words somewhere on your body and take a picture of yourself. You can also write the word down on something more conventional like a piece of paper.

Remember this one word resolution idea is to help simplify your life and make you feel like you have conquered the new year at the same time. Make it what you want and need. If one word isn’t enough, focus on a couple words. You can have a word a month or a word a week. If the idea stresses you out, then don’t do it. There is nothing wrong with that. This is just an idea you can use for you to become a better you.

Through out the year, on my blog and Instagram, I will share my journey with my word of the year. So stay tuned and we can complete this goal together. Use the hashtag #SimplyOneWord to share your word. I’m always looking for inspiring people like yourself to help me achieve my own goals. So let’s start the year strong and conquer or goals together!
